Spring Happenings

Happy Spring, Friends!

The calendar says it’s spring, even though Mother Nature may not agree.  And the calendar also says that we have MANY events happening in the next few weeks.  Let’s get you caught up!

1)       Our new Executive Director, Carla Geiersbach, is officially part of the FHI family starting Monday March 30.  If you missed the announcement, you can find it here:  Fair Hill International Welcomes Carla Geiersbach as New Executive Director
2)      We’re planning a very special planting day on Saturday April 4 and we could use your help.  We need ten or so strong bodies to help plant a perennial garden at The Steps.  This is the location we will use to remember our dear Judy Thayer at the April HT and the Dutta Corp Fall Festival.  Judy’s “scaredy cat” will grace the garden during these events so you can wave as you walk (or ride) by and remember how much Judy meant to Fair Hill International.  If you can help, please call John Ryan at 410-392-9897.
3)      Our very first event of the season isn’t a Horse Trial, and it isn’t a Cross Country schooling.  It’s FOXCATCHER ENDURANCE on Saturday April 11th!  Our endurance friends will ride 25 or 50 miles in a race to see who can finish first with a horse deemed “fit to continue.”  We’re looking forward to following the ride on our FaceBook Page.  Entries are still open for the ride, and entries postmarked before April 1 get a nice entry fee discount.  More info can be found on the Foxcatcher website.

4)      Entries close on Tuesday March 31st for our first Horse Trials on the year.  We have an entry status posted on our Horse Trials page – check it out to see which of your favorite riders will attend!  Currently local stalwart Sally Cousins is slated to bring four mounts.  Olympian Boyd Martin is entered with five horses.  Waylon Roberts, part of the Phillip Dutton Eventing Team, has seven horses entered including the VERY popular OTTB and Preakness Stakes runner Icabad Crane.
5)      How do you watch all these top-notch horses and riders?  Come to Fair Hill on April 17 – 19 for our April Recognized Horse Trials.  Cross Country will happen both in our Saw Mill Field and on the Gallaher Road site where the October Festival happens.  The CIC 3* and Advanced cross country courses will be on Gallaher Road.  More scheduling, ride times, and directions are posted on our Horse Trials page, which will be updated frequently as the event approaches.

6)      How many volunteers does it take to run a Horse Trials?  I imagine Bodgie Read could tell you precisely, but Carla plans to find out the hard way.  If you’re volunteering for us April 17 – 19, look for Carla.  Her goal is to meet each and every volunteer and to personally shake your hand.  If you’re NOT signed up to volunteer for us yet, what are you waiting for?  Three days of competition in two different locations means Bodgie needs LOTS of help.  Please sign up to help on our Volunteer Page, and accept our eternal gratitude.  We can’t do this without you!
7)      REMEMBER – our Horse Trials volunteers all receive a FREE cross country schooling!  You can use it for yourself or pass it on to a friend or family member.  Our schooling season begins on Tuesday April 21 and continues through September.  Find more info on our Cross Country Schooling page.
8)      Elk Creek Combined Driving Event returns for the eleventh year Saturday, June 6 & Sunday, June 7.  Many volunteers are needed and a few key volunteer opportunities are available - Chief CDE Dressage Steward, Chief Marathon Section Timer Steward & Radio Steward.  Contact Diane @ dltrefry@gmail.com for more information or go to the Fair Hill International website.  Spend a sunny day at Fair Hill and enjoy the beautiful carriage driving turnouts on Saturday and the exciting marathon on Sunday!

We can’t wait to get the season started, and we hope you will join us either in person or via our blog and FaceBook page.  Have a great spring!

The Fair Hill International Team
